A Mustard Seed of Faith Moves Mountains, but What about Dirt Piles?

Have you ever thought about God's power? I mean, have you ever paused to really consider the magnitude of God's might? I know God is powerful, but I frequently underestimate God's potential to show out for me.

Last week, a contractor came to my house and poured a cement patio. Using a skid loader, the crew moved the dirt into piles to make a space for the patio. When they left, they didn't move it back to fill in around the patio. So, I have been filling in the gaps by moving the dirt from the piles around the cement patio...with a shovel and a wheelbarrow.

With every scoop of dirt, I felt the weight of the soil on the spade of my shovel. Despite scoop after scoop, the pile didn't seem to decrease. I started thinking about how God made the Earth in one day.

How amazing that God shaped all of the Earth! My little plot of land is just a speck on the Earth God formed lovingly with His hands. God created my speck in one day (Genesis 1:1, 9-10), and I spend hours and days laboring to make my little speck of land aesthetically pleasing. In a day. How powerful our God must be that he shaped the land in one day!

My tiny human form works diligently to try to landscape around my house. Any project requiring any kind of effort is nothing compared to what I could achieve with God; God can do so much more. Why, then, do I perpetually insist on doing everything myself? Why don't I ask for God's help and intervention more often? How much Faith is necessary to move God to do something to help me? The Bible says not much.

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus tells the disciples, "Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it

will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20, NIV). Mustard seeds are pretty small. Faith the size of a mustard seed doesn't seem like much. That's all I need...faith the size of a mustard...and God will make things possible for me. What an awesome God!

Moving this mountain of dirt is possible for me. I have the strength. God has given me the health and motivation necessary to move that pile of dirt. Still, I'm putting up a prayer that God will put it on someone's heart to bring over a shovel and help. :)

Here is a picture of the pile of dirt I am laboring over for my patio project:

God is an awesome God! I'm so thankful for all of the ways God shows out in my life!

Best, Michelle
