Many years ago, my boys and I were in the play The Best Christmas Pageant Ever in Pierre, SD. This play is based on the novel by Barbara Robinson, and there’s a movie with the same title coming out. I saw a preview for the movie, and it made me laugh and cry (that’s how you know it’s going to be good)! Just so you know, this post contains some spoilers about the movie, as I’m going to talk a bit about the play that we were in.
In our play in Pierre, I played Grace Bradley, the church lady, who was in charge of the church Christmas pageant, and my boys played two of the Herdman children, who were children in the town that never usually came to church. However, the year that Grace was leading the pageant, the Herdman children decided that they all wanted to be a part of the pageant.
The problem was that the whole town thought that the Herdman children were terrible, awful, naughty children, and because of that, most all of the church people didn’t want to include them in the pageant. They thought they would mess it up, but Grace spoke up for them and allowed them all to be in the play.
All sorts of hilarious moments ensued with the Herdmans doing about everything they could do wrong, including smoking a cigar in the church bathroom. In the play, my boys really enjoyed acting naughty on stage, even if it was a bit of a stretch, especially for Garrison! I loved spending time with them, helping them learn their lines, and seeing them blossom in our practices. It really was a special time!
Thinking about the play, it brings back great memories, but when watching the trailer for the movie, I remembered the real point of the play. It really is showing that no matter who we are or what we’ve done, Jesus came for all of us! He came for the Grace Bradleys of the world, and He came for my family and for me, but he also came for the Herdmans of the world.
John 3:16-17 says this: “16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” God loves all of us, every one of us, and he wants all of us to be saved!
This is the good news! What a wonderful message to share with others! The story of The Best Christmas Pageant really is a powerful story, and I encourage you all to read it or watch it.
Here’s a picture of my family in December 2007 after our final night of the play. Jamison loved messing up his hair and his clothes for this role, and Garrison found it hard to get into character when we first started the play, but you can see by the look on his face below, he was still in character for this picture! Geoff even got involved by running spotlight for the play. This one of my all-time favorite pictures of our family!
Thank you for reading, friends.
Love,
Julie
