A Summer of Gratitude: Awesome God

Writer's picture: Michelle GraberMichelle Graber

Think back to a time in your life when you became so overwhelmed with the beauty of something, tears sprang to your eyes with the awe of it. Now, capture that feeling. That's the awesome creation of God.

Recently, my daughter Maggie and I hiked to a waterfall in Boulder Canyon. Boulder Canyon is in the Rocky Mountain range north and west of Boulder, Colorado. Every time I face a mountain, I am startled by my own smallness and God's largess. Here, my words fail a bit. The words to describe God's size elude me. Awe seems not quite powerful enough to describe the overwhelming sense of marvel and greatness I feel when faced with the grand beauty and majesty of any part of the Rockies I encounter--and this is just one small part of God's creation.

Facing this small, easy (haha--easy; that's a whole nother post) hike impressed on me a feeling that is just the beginning of something so amazing, I feel like I can't touch it. The pleasure of the moment threatened to overwhelm me. Here I was, facing this massive creation God made, with a beautiful smart woman God blessed me to raise, and the sheer force of it built a sense of awe and joy so powerful in my chest, I thought I might burst with the feeling.

I asked my daughter if there was a place I might get a picture of the view. Well, here it is, but looking at the picture now, I cling to the shadow of the awe and pleasure I felt at the majesty of God's creation.

In Psalm 95:3-5 says, "For the Lord is an awesome God; a great king above all divine beings. And the mountain peaks belong to him. The sea that he made belongs to him, along with the dry land that his hands formed" Praise him!

Wherever your summer journeys take you, pause to give thanks to God for each moment.

Praying blessings on your travels,

Michelle
